Assistive Technology

At the SAAVI Assistive Technology Center, we provide both group and individualized instruction in standard computer applications and assistive technologies.  We are committed to providing essential tools for empowerment to our consumers by developing an individualized plan, which will maximize independence and employability.

  • Assistive Technologies and standard computer assessments

  • Job-site evaluations

  • One-on-One instruction in the home or at SAAVI that targets individual needs and expectations

  • Demonstrations of leading products like speech output software, screen magnification software, CCTV's, electronic note taking devices, digital talking book devices, refreshable Braille displays, Braille embossers and other related software

These services are fully accessible to people with all degrees of visual impairments as well as other disabilities through the use of assistive technology.  Available services include instruction in computers and electronic note-taking devices that are equipped with screen magnification programs, speech access, Braille access (refreshable Braille displays and Braille embossers), voice activated systems, scan and read systems, and a combination of other communication modalities and devices.

Here at SAAVI, we know that people with vision impairments can use their computers. There are special screen magnification and speech programs that allow complete operation of the computer with little or no vision, and training on thee programs is available at SAAVI – FREE OF CHARGE. There is much more to assistive technology than the computer. We realize that not everyone wants or needs a computer. There are several other technologies such as telephone information services, portable note takers, digital recorders and Braille, which encourage independence and organization; FREE TRAINING is available for these alternate assistive technologies. The computer can be a powerful and productive tool for everyone, including those with visual impairments. Technology Training at SAAVI can be your key to learning the many facets of Adaptive and Assistive Technology. Please CALL 795-1331 to schedule your complementary appointment.

SAAVI offers a variety of services including an introduction to Electronic Magnifiers (CCTV’s) for SAAVI clients. The service is designed to acquaint clients with electronic magnification and provide them with an opportunity to determine if electronic magnification will enhance their reading and writing ability. The service is not designed to acquaint clients with the several make and models of CCTV’s available for sale. Clients are urged to visit local dealers to view and obtain information on what is available. SAAVI representatives are not permitted to recommend any particular type of CCTV or local dealer. Clients are urged to visit each of the dealers listed in the attached resource sheet before they decide to buy a CCTV.

Please contact Manny Aregullin, SAAVI's Technology Director, for more information.

We would like to give a very special thanks to the Chaparral Foundation Computer Hospital for their generous donations of training computers and large screen monitors.
